Have Fun, Stay Safe Summertime Tips

By: Lynn Newman/MSW, LCSW, Clinical Coordinator

As the school year winds down and comes to a close, we all look forward to being outdoors.  Pool, beach, camping, vacations are just a few of the summertime events we enjoy.   Here are a few easy tips to keep you safe while having fun.

“Here Comes the Sun”…Apply SPF 30 or stronger before going outside and reapply every 2 hours. Wear hats and stay in a shady area when able.  The sun’s strongest rays are between 10:00 am and 2:00 pm.  Sunburn is painful and damaging so protect yourself.   Avoid strenuous activity and exercise     during the hottest part of the day.  Keep your body cool by drinking plenty of water, taking cool showers or baths, go into an air conditioned area and swimming.  It is best to wear loose fitting, light weight and light colored clothing.

“Splish Splash”… We all love to go swimming when it’s hot outside.  It cools us off and is great exercise.  Practice pool safety by being familiar with the water you are swimming in and the safety challenges they can present.  Always swim with a buddy and only go into deep water if you are a    competent  swimmer. Water fun is a great way to keep cool and have fun but can be a risk factor for danger. Be aware of your surroundings and always let an adult know of your whereabouts.  Boating is also fun and life jackets should be worn when out on the water.

“Shoo Fly, Don’t Bother Me”…Using scented scents, hair products and perfumes can attract bugs.  Avoid areas where insects tend to nest such as gardens, sweet beverages, uncovered food and still water.  Use insect repellant daily but still check daily for ticks and other bug bites.

“C’mon Let Me Ride”…Bike riding is so much fun during the warmer weather.  Know the rules of the road and pay special attention to traffic laws.  Always wear a helmet and reflective clothing.  Be certain to ride in the same direction as cars and follow safety rules.  Learn and use hand signals to make drivers aware of your direction.

“The River”…Drinking water is a way to cool down.  Use the 20 minute rule to have a drink of water every 20 minutes.  You can also have a sports drink to keep hydrated.  Soda and other sugary drinks should be avoided.  They only make you thirstier.

“Schools Out for Summer”…Have fun and be safe….”See you in September
