Seining the Bay

By: Kathleen Caffee, Science Teacher

Biology students were able to take to the Barnegat Bay in Berkeley Island County Park.  They used their new seining skills in an effort to capture various organisms in the bay.  They succeeded in capturing a comb jellies, northern pipefish, mud dog whelks, and many blue claw crabs.  Some students sampled the sea lettuce and tried sieving for small organisms.  All organisms with exception to the microscopic plankton were safely returned to the bay to swim another day.  The next day students enjoyed finding plankton under the microscope.  It was certainly a trip to be remembered!
