Trauma Center Services | Addressing The Root Of The Issue

In its simplest of definitions, trauma can be defined as an experience that is both significantly distressing and presents as a real threat of safety to an individual. The impact and effects of a traumatic event on a person can begin to show signs in the days or weeks following the situation that occurred.  Every individual responds to these experiences differently, but struggles often seen include, but are not limited to, feelings of being overwhelmed and sad, difficulty thinking of something other than that event, and anger. Left unaddressed and untreated, individuals can often face challenges lending to the impact on their overall quality of life. If you or someone you know has experienced trauma, you should immediately call a trusted trauma center.

Trauma-Focused Treatment

Trauma-focused treatment is developed to assist individuals struggling with challenges related to a traumatic event develop skills to manage and reduce the impact of the event on their everyday lives. The treatment and interventions utilized at the trauma center can be both preventative in nature, as well as managing the ongoing longer-term symptoms related to an individual’s experience.  Trauma-focused treatment is developed and geared to create a safe environment to allow for the processing, discussion, and allow for some relief for those struggling in a vulnerable state.

Practices and Treatment Options

There has been increased focus and attention in the past decade given to treatment protocols and best practices in caring and treating those identifying trauma-related responses.  Some of the most successful evidence-based practices and treatment modalities for the care of those struggling include:

  • Cognitive Processing Therapy
  • Prolonged Exposure
  • EMDR
  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy

Therapeutic practices and interventions are never “one size fits all”.  Discussion, understanding, and agreement of the approach utilized should always occur prior to the start of any treatment modalities.  What is effective for one person will not always have the same or similar response for another.  I encourage all persons seeking care with the hope and goal of reducing the impact of a traumatic experience to have the conversation with their trauma center providers at the beginning of their therapeutic process to decide which approach will be their best “fit”.
