Maintaining Emotional Balance and Minimizing Holiday Stress

By: Shetina Barnes, M.Ed, School Social Worker

Maintaining emotional balance can be difficult to do with the pressure of the holidays.  Financial and social/emotional stressors can easily derail us from finding the joy of the season.

Here are a few suggestions to stay focused and to minimize your holiday stress:

~Stay mindful that Christmas is not about the gifts under the tree, but rather about enjoying quality time with our loved ones…making memories

~Spend within your means. Gift giving doesn’t have to be extravagant. Homemade gifts are meaningful and budget friendly!

~ Make time to do something fun, or find some quiet time to relax.

~Physical activity is a great way to reduce stress. Go for a bike ride or brisk walk.

~Volunteer your time helping a neighbor or someone in need

~Use your support system to get through difficult moments, i.e. talking to a trusted friend, family member, or a mental health professional
