Ocean Academy Privileged Lunch Program Success

Ocean Academy has many exciting programs; privilege lunch instituted in September of 2014 is one very popular with the student population. Once a month students that are eligible enjoy lunch with the principal, Mr. Corbett and a staff member chosen by the students to be staff of the month.  This program serves as a reward for students who achieved academic and social goals as well as good attendance the three weeks prior to the lunch.  Mr. Corbett has found, “this program to be a powerful motivator for students and in recent months has had very impressive results.”

The number of students attending lunch has grown steadily; on average half the student population is eligible to attend privilege lunch.  Mr. Corbett and the students of OA have enjoyed lunch at Artisans, Water Street, Aqua blu, and Sawmill as well as several other establishments in the area.  Students appreciate the opportunity to be out of the classroom with their peers and have only wonderful things to say about the experience.

This time is used to connect with the students and to model proper behavior in public places.  In the future Mr. Corbett hopes to invite business leaders and community members to lunch with the students to share ideas about their role in the community and help to prepare them for the future.
