PIXAR:  A History

By: Professor James/OA Student

The newest class I taught this year was the history of Pixar Animation Studios. In 1986, they released Luxo Jr, their first short film, about a desk lamp playing with a ball. Since then, Luxo Jr became the studio’s official mascot. My classmate’s assignment was to write a biography of their favorite characters from each movie. Pixar began in 1979, known as Graphics Group, owned by George Lucas, the producer of Star Wars. Then in 1982, it became Pixar Studios, owned by Disney, with  John Lasseter, as chief creative officer.

Here is a list of all the movies they made from the past two decades.

Toy Story (1995)

A Bug’s Life (1998)

Toy Story 2 (1999)

Monsters, Inc. (2001)

Finding Nemo (2003)

The Incredibles (2004)Cars (2006)

Ratatouille (2007)

WALL-E (2008)

Up (2009)

Toy Story 3 (2010)

Cars 2 (2011)

Brave (2012)

Monsters University (2013)

Inside Out (2015)

The Good Dinosaur (2015)

Finding Dory (2016)

Cars 3 (2017)

Coco (2018) (In theaters now)

Toy Story 4 (2018)

Finding Marlin (2018)

The Incredibles 2 (2019)

They made a lot, but it was worth it!

Walt Disney soon purchased Pixar, and they soon worked together to make stunning and compelling animated movies, especially short films. Over time, Pixar has became popular like Disney, and so has its movies. It was that little desk lamp who started it all. Even though Disney was good at animation, they thought they needed a partner. It has filled the hearts and minds of children and adults over the years, and is still going on as of today.

Keep on animating!
