Silverton Farms

By: Charla Cole/Instructional Paraprofessional

Ocean Academy once again embarked on its annual pumpkin picking trip to Silverton Farms in Toms River. The students and staff enjoyed feeding apples to the goats, watching the chickens lay eggs, and of course the educational hayride led by Farmer Tom. As we rode through the crops we were able to sample and taste many of the local and organic produce the farm is known for including: arugula, swiss chard, ghost peppers, kale, lima beans, and fresh parsley.  These were just some of the vegetables passed around for us to taste, smell, and learn about how they are grown. During our tour we came upon a row of overgrown weeds in which the owner challenged us to guess what vegetable it was. As we tried to figure it out he pulled out a shovel and started digging up fresh white potatoes that were growing underground! The students had a lot of fun, taking pictures, exploring the farm itself, and learning new things.

Ocean Academy would like to thank the owners and staff of Silverton Farms for another friendly and knowledgeable experience. We we see you again next year!
